BIOGRAPHY

Alfred Martinez is a mixed media painter, watercolorist and photographer. He has lived and worked in New York City for 38 years. He is a Professor Emeritus of Art from the University of Connecticut. In 2007 The Oxford Roundtable Forum on Public Policy English journal published his research paper: The Gap Narrows in Fine Art/ Modernism and Women’s Art. His works are included in the art collections of Abbey Regina Laudis of Connecticut, in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 2013 his work was exhibited in the Whitney Museum’s “I, You, We” exhibit. In 1977 he held his first one-person show at the 112 Green Street Space in Soho. That exhibit initiated his idea of painting on three-dimensional objects which was very novel in the early 70s. He credits that first solo show for solidifying his artistic vision. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad since then.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Alfred Martinez paints on various tangible objects in order to communicate ideas. Painting on satin or vinyl canvases with laminated photos and attached objects like painted wicker baskets, or embedding audio digital frames on the work’s surface, is his normal process of expression. Alfred says, “My visual language conveys a subjective thinking which is real, wonderful and unexpected.”
